Re: Advice for future medical student please.

Hi! First, I dunno where are you from, so I don't really know if my advice will help you.

Medical school is hard. In my country, at least, it's very hard to get the grades to acess it, so usually most of the people have what it takes to follow through medical school. You'll need to have a lot of dedication, a lot of concentration for long hours of study, and a passion for helping people, because after all, you're going to be a doctor.

I'd still advise you not to let the rest of your life on hold just because of the degree you're going to take. Medical school can be very absorvent and demanding, but it doesn't mean you can't have a boyfriend, go out with friends or have extra-curricular activities. I actually entered my college's theatre group in the 1st year of medical school!

Most important of all is that you enjoy yourself. No doctor is a good doctor if he's doing stuff against his/her will. You'll develop a strong conscience over things. You'll be close with human suffering, and as a student you won't quite know what to do in the first place. You'll build a very critical spirit, but try not to lose your sense of wonder as well. You'll need to be strong and confident when you're with patients, and also learn how to empathise every single time.

Also be prepared to see things that will shock you and you'll have to cope with that.

I dunno what to say more especifically but feel free to ask anything... smile

Re: Advice for future medical student please.

i have completed a degree in medical science/ forensic biotechnology, im an enrolled nurse and studying to become a registered nurse i have applied to do medicene in australia and have been accepted. I have these pearls of wisdom: 1. you will make mistakes when you are studying learn from them ask what could i have done better and prepare yourself for an honest answer.2. Don't let study completely rule your life. Sometimes when you relax and have a bit of fun you find that things can be easier to understand. 3. Always respect the other professionals you will be working with. DON't get into the state of mind that because your a doctor you know everything. TO provide the best care for your patients you need to work with others around you. I'm a nurse and a scientist and i have had some doctors treat me like trash.  4. Never forget the reason why you are becoming a doctor, this will be of a great help when things get you down. 5. Remember that no matter what you do people won't always make it. I'm a nurse so i have been through this alot. Death is part of the job and i find it never gets easier and you never get used it. If this was true my opinion is that your not human. Death is never easy. Your aware of the emotions and are better prepared to deal with them but it doesn't make it easier. My advice here is to have a cry and then remember them and say a good bye and feel at peace knowing that you tried and remember that you have other people to care for.
I hope this helps you in your quest to become a doctor feel free to message me if you want to talk about anything or ask about advice

Re: Advice for future medical student please.

Hi Fleure!! first of all congratulations getting into medical school!!! i think that's the hardest part.

I'm a second year (out of 4 years) in the states. Some tidbits i would pass on to you...
regarding the classroom/studying:
-when you want a day off, take it. you can always catch up later and a clear mind is more useful for studying than one longing to be playing
-make friends inside school and keep friends outside of school. no one else will understand what you are going through except other students. no one can take your mind away like students not doing what you are and you will need the break
in the hospital:
-#1: be nice to the nurses!! they not only know these diseases better than us (remember they've been working there many years with these patients) but they also know everything else going on in their ward and hospital. if you miss something, they are more likely to help you out if you've been respectful to them. if you've been an a$$, they will find a way for you to make an a$$ of yourself to everyone else too, and your life will be difficult
-never forget you are treating people, real live intelligent beings with feelings and families. they deserve your time and full explanation of what is happening to them and what you want to do to them

good luck! i'd love to hear updates on how your first days go!

Re: Advice for future medical student please.

Trixie B is so right about being nice to the nurses! And all the other health professionals. I never learnt so much about ECG than the time I sat down with a cardiopneumologist technician (those guys who wander around the hospital with the ECG machine and take care of ventilators and a whole load of stuff), and usually when I have doubts about the way a patient needs to be positioned I always go to the nurse or even to the phisiotherapist. They have no problem when it comes to helping out students. We need colaboration in hospitals, and I always say I hope we remain humble like that when we become real doctors because it's hedious how some docs treat the other hospital people.

And yeah loved the advice about taking a day off. I do it about once a month, just take a day to sleep as much as I want and do other stuff. And we know it won't make a difference because we study so much that we have a proper ability to catch up when we need to. Obviously try to chose a day of only theorical classes, and not hospital work, because we need as much practice as we can manage wink
