Tell me about it. I haven't even bought mine yet, it's breaking my heart (and my bank-balance).

It was pretty cool being an English major... once I was to the point of taking all classes in my major, I could buy a lot of my texts as cheap used paperbacks.
But yeah, they are ridiculously expensive!

Heehee, ditto that. But we have to buy 30 or more books while others need less than 10.

I have to pay with my pell grant. The problem was that none of the books could be bought used, and none of them can be sold back!

oh man i hate that! then you are stuck with them. college stinks! it's worth it in the end. sad thing about it.... you buy the expensive textbooks and never cover the whole book

I would try to get as many as possible online, ask your teachers if previous editions would be ok. Generally the only difference is in the page numbers.
I have had good luck with these sites: half.com, alibris.com, amazon.com

Ugh, those books are the WORST! I bought a Formal Logic book last year that cost me a pretty penny and could only be used once because of the included software. Maybe next semester you'll have better luck.

I usually have a search on ebay for my books...the union at my uni also has a wonderful stall where people can buy and sell their books and usually i can find the exact edition I need for less than half the price!! But yeah...had to spend £50 for one book last year that I must of used once and have no use for now
I don't mind spending cash on the books I'll probably keep for life as they will relate to my career but I hate having to buy the ones for one-off modules.

www.usedtextbooks.com
You can easily sell books back that your university doesn't want back, even if they are old editions and so forth.
They cover the shipping to get them to their place too.

You're from Glasgow, anywhere you can recommend for cheap books? I'm needing one that is apparently really pricey but it covers my second year too. Amazon has a different edition

My textbooks are supplied by the school. And are completely free.
As long as you don't damage them.

I almost just died when I saw the price of the dictionary required. The dictionary! Le petit Robert is £60.00 for the dictionary alone! Then there are 4 novels I have to buy, and the foreign language ones always seem to be more expensive.
I need a lottery win sometime soon.

John Smiths is pretty fair and they often have second hand versions of the new editions.

You're not at university are you? If you are...
Where in god's name do you go??? I need to go to grad school there if they pay for all your texts.
Another good place to buy and sell texts is half.com.

I've generally got by with no textbooks. When your college has a library that is open 24 hours a day, you have a library with a copy of every book ever within one min walk, and subject libraries within 10 mins walk, you don't need many textbooks.
Mind you my subject isn't textbook based (though it is book based)
I heart my university

My school library sucks. I went looking for reference books on a few subjects and I couldn't find crap. And all of the encyclopedias they have? I'm not allowed to use. lol

When I was at a community college for my first two years, I was paying $200 on average for ONE book USED, but it evened out because I was only paying about $800 for tuition for full-time per semester. I transfered to a 4-year university and now it's $3000 for full-time tuition per semester, but the books are a little cheaper.
I pre-ordered my books from the bookstore and the estimate I got was $557 for 6 books and that's if they're all new. If they're used then it'll be $418.25. I actually need to see if they're ready for me to pick up.

I'm 16. Of course I don't go to a university. I've got two more years. My brother had to pay for his text books too. He's going to a community college right now.

No need to get snippy. I apologize for not looking at you age. I just wondered because it's not like not having to pay for books in secondary or elementary is something special. There are VERY few schools that make students buy their text books. Occasionally for advanced/AP classes but even then not the actual text books that i have ever heard of.

I had to pay for books every year until I went to a charter academy. D;
The public school "fee" was awful. So bad that my choice was drop out or get a yob to pay for it. Eventually I did drop out, but I still managed to find a free school. Freaking like.. $250 a year.
